They arrive at the house — decorated like the Korova Milk Bar Lite — expecting a typical reality show experience full of drinking, hot tub shenanigans, and self-promoting confessionals. It isn’t until the first person is voted off that they discover that Furcas meant it literally when he said only one person would survive. The fictional audience watches the murders as well, and though public consensus seems split on whether the grisly executions are real or not, viewership increases after each death. Lee is clearly trying to implicate the real-world audience here and condemn our communal bloodlust; we are watching a film about gruesome murders for entertainment, after all.

At one point, Kaspar questions Furcas' reasoning for the torture, only for the host to berate him for being known as the ex-husband of a pop star and a failed reality show star. In the next round, Headstone is killed off, leaving Kaspar, Lonnie, and Cat Zim remaining. Kaspar and Lonnie eventually give into their mutual attraction and make love, Cat Zim tries to redeem herself by pleasuring herself, but it still fails, which results in Cat receiving the lowest ratings. Cat's challenge requires her to play a game of chess against Furcas.

Unbeknownst to the contestants, the show is run by Nero Alexander, a wealthy and sociopathic man who is willing to pay people to commit murder and atrocities for his entertainment. The penalty games are actually a matter of life or death, as the odds are high that the games will result in a gruesome death. Prior to the first elimination, the contestants all generally treat the show as they would any other, despite clues that something is obviously wrong. For the first elimination, Lonni and Nevin are forced to participate in the game while the others watch in a soundproofed room.

[FilmQuest Fest 2023 Review] THE DEEP DARK
In the show house, Dex unsuccessfully tries to leave and is forced to stand in a container of acid until he dies. The ending of TheFunhouse is one that flows withbrilliance and disturbance, because it leaves you with a particularlyconfused and cold feeling. It's astounding how Hooper takes hisoptimistic characters and sucks all and any hope, life and happinessfrom them. What is left of them for the audience at the end of themovie is a soulless doll, the hollow shell of what was once a humanbeing. Thiscombined with the sets and props, colors and shadows, music andsounds, and many other features makes TheFunhouse a strange and marveloushorror film for all spectators of both darkness and entreating magic.
Funhouse Reviews
The wheel selects "Pass the Buck", which allows her to survive by making another contestant play a punishment game. Kaspar volunteers to go in Lonnie's stead, but Furcas forces both to participate in a game of dueling pistols. The FBI manages to track the signal and goes to what they believe is the right location, only to instead find a small container filled with the heads of the other contestants. Refusing to participate, Lonnie and Kaspar share a kiss before they both commit suicide by turning the pistols on themselves. With Cat as the only person left alive, she wins the game and is given the prize money.
Both were equally effectivescores for those specific films. But in The Funhouse, thereare bombastic beats of bass and snare drums, shrill and subtlewhistles of flutes and oboes, piercing trills and twangs of trumpetsand trombones, and the harmonious melody of the piano. These and themany other musical instruments that develop lovely tension andsuspense join together to create a beautiful, moody and operaticscore. Amy Harper(Elizabeth Berridge) goes on a double date to the local travelingcarnival with her date, Buzz Dawson (Cooper Huckabee) along with hertwo friends, Liz Duncan (Largo Woodruff) and Richie Atterbury (MilesChapin). They goon many of the various rides, play the assorted games, view a magicshow, visit a sideshow exhibit, etc.
Found Footage: The History of Indie Horror’s Favourite Format
He is rejected constantly by The Funhouse barker, whobeats him and tells him to never call him father, but also uses himas a homicidal tool when needed. Gunther's relationship with hisfather correlates back to the overall theme of strong (albeit sickand demented) family values that is prevalent in many of TobeHooper's films, particularly in TheTexas Chain Saw Massacre. Thisfamiliar ground comes to the audience as bolstering while at the sametime showing the shock and audacity of their symbiotic affiliation, which is a terrific and equal balance.
If two contestants ties or nearly tie for the lowest number of votes, they must compete against each other in the penalty games. If they try to leave the house, they will be penalized and removed from the game. There are several aspects to be praised aboutthis particular horror gem, but two of the most striking to the eyeare the production design and the anamorphic widescreencinematography, which elevate the movie from a simple slasher filminto a stylish art house film. All of the set pieces look like theycame from a vintage 1950s carnival.
As the film production took longer than expected, the book was released before the film. Once they arrive they spend a lot of time looking around at all the wanders of a carnival. Such as; deformed babies in jars, slightly overweight ladies dancing naked, a dude dressed as Dracula that gets the girl to stand in a box then hammers a big stake into it.
With its two-headed cow, mutant baby in a jar, jokes about bestiality, references to 'Bride of Frankenstein' and misbegotten monster, this is very much a horror movie that contemplates, with awe and terror, the sometimes terrible consequences of sex. The imaginatively designed funhouse, oddball characters along the periphery, and a masterfully staged climax allow this to stand out. The Funhouse is a 1980 novelization by American author Dean Koontz, based on a Larry Block (aka Lawrence J. Block) screenplay, which was made into the 1981 film The Funhouse, directed by Tobe Hooper.
If they lose (and they almost always lose), they are brutally murdered. The Funhousehas one of the most unique and fascinating creature designs of all80s horror cinema. The scenewhere Gunther rips off his Frankenstein monster mask has just as muchhorror and shock value as the original unmasking scene in ThePhantom of the Opera. He and Craig Reardon should be given creditand be proud of for thinking outside the box and offering us animaginative and extraordinary monster makeup from the 1980s. So we’re stuck with Ula and the others as they fight among themselves and struggle to win the approval of Internet rubberneckers. Nero’s funhouse is a well-upholstered meatgrinder, complete with tacky upscale furniture and fixtures, like the nude, Korova Milk Bar-style mannequins that bookend the living room’s flat-screen.
Audiences can experience Summer Movie Clubhouse sponsor Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 in theaters beginning July 3 and sponsor DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot beginning September 27. The Funhouse is all the fun of the fair with no disappointment. Enraged, he beats but does not kill her, stating that he will hunt her down one day and murder her own children. Liz, Richie’s little girlfriend ends up offering herself to the monster so the monster will let her live. Buzz, the jock type that Amy is on her first date with, stands up for his women and gets killed for it.
